Call for Presentations
European Computer Science Summit 2007 (ECSS 2007)
8-9 October 2007, Berlin
Informatics Europe is the association of Computer Science departments of universities and research laboratories, public and private, in Europe and neighbouring areas. Informatics Europe was created (originally under the name "euroTICS") as a result of the first two European Computer Science Summits (ECSS), held at ETH Zurich in October 2005 and October 2006, where heads of Computer Science departments from all over the European region joined forces for the first time to define and promote common policies and study common issues.
The 2007 European Computer Science Summit (ECSS 2007) will be held at TU Berlin on the 8th and 9th of October. The program of the summit meeting will consist of invited talks by prominent academics and professionals, plenary discussion sessions on current issues, industry panels and exhibitions, and workshops. It will provide outstanding opportunities for interaction with fellow leaders of departments, schools, and institutes in Informatics research and teaching in Europe as well as leaders from the European IT and ICT industries.
TOPICS
The summit is not a traditional scientific conference but it is focused on analysis, discussion, and policy in connection with research and education in Computer Science (Informatics) in Europe. Informatics Europe has five working groups looking at: evaluation criteria for CS/IT research; curriculum issues; student enrolment and image of the discipline; facts and figures about informatics in Europe; and lobbying and strategy. Contributions are sought in these areas and on all other issues relevant to Computer Science in Europe. Some examples are:
- Strategic directions in computing research in Europe, FP7, European Technology Platforms, national trends, innovation programs
- IT Trends in business and industry, role of universities, consequences for research and training in Computing, need for new educational programs.
- Computer Science as a discipline: methodologies, theory versus practice, experimental research, differences with other sciences and engineering
- Interdisciplinary research, research collaboration with industry, research infrastructures, trends in funding programs
- Implementation of the Bologna process, Bachelor and Masters programs, PhD
- programs, connections with research, forming Graduate Schools, links with companies
- Curriculum organization throughout EU, exchange programs, internationalization
- Accreditation criteria, quality certification, curriculum standards, outcome orientation, European Qualification Framework (EQF)
- Student recruitment, attracting students, competition on the world-wide market for higher education in Computer Science
- Careers in Computing and IT research, women in Computer Science, starting companies, how to lead research institutes
