ECSS 2015 is the 11th Summit of Informatics Europe. This major event is designed as the meeting place for anyone interested in issues of research, education, and policy in Informatics.
It is a unique opportunity to meet some of the leading decision makers in informatics research and education, and discuss the critical issues of the discipline. The Summit is devoted to important and timely strategic issues and trends regarding all aspects of informatics: education, research, funding, entrepreneurship, management, career development, and policies.
Traditionally, ECSS conferences are organized by Informatics Europe in collaboration with a host institution, active member of the association. The ECSS 2015 is hosted by the Faculty of Informatics, Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), and will be held in Vienna, Austria, October 12-14, 2015.
The ECSS 2015 is co-chaired by Carlo Ghezzi, President of Informatics Europe, and Gerald Steinhardt, Dean of Faculty of Informatics, TU Wien. The program chairs are Hannes Werthner, professor at the Faculty of Informatics, TU Wien and Frank van Harmelen, Department of Computer Science & The Network Institute, VU University Amsterdam.
The central topic of the 2015 Summit is "Informatics in the future – in the year 2025"
We are certain that the topic is of interest to the entire academic Informatics community, renowned speakers will give presentations and participate in several panel discussions.
Informatics as the science behind IT has two faces:
- Informatics "in itself", e.g. algorithm, design, information presentation, programming languages, distribution aspects, complexity issues; and
- Informatics "for others" and "behind others", being a tool or methodological approach in other sciences and application fields. It is pervasive and changes the world, with its artifacts and also its way of thinking.
Also informatics is interdisciplinary quasi by nature, with engineering, formal methods (logics, maths) and natural science based approaches.
This is the background of the ECSS 2015. Starting from this we will discuss and reflect on research issues and methods, with a 10 year perspective.

Pre-Summit Workshops
We have confirmed as part of the ECSS 2015 events two special Pre-Summit Workshops on October 12:
Chair: Mehdi Jazayeri, University of Lugano
Chairs: Uwe Egly and Hilda Tellioglu, TU Wien
Audience
The ECSS audience includes anyone with a stake in the future of Information and Communication Science and Technology in Europe. Traditionally, many department heads, directors of both industrial and academic labs, and other decision makers make up a substantial share of ECSS participants. However, the scope of the conference is much broader and professionals from all levels and all sectors (academia, industry, government) would benefit from the discussions on stage at the ECSS 2015 and be involved on critical debate vie view on the future of the discipline.
What is the purpose of the European Computer Science Summit?
- To debate the future of the discipline, its role and influence in both academy and society.
- To expand the international network of deans, heads of departments, and research directors in Informatics.
- To provide a forum for discussion and the exchange of solutions and best practices on common issues.
- To examine ways in which deans, department heads, and research directors in Informatics can work together to improve teaching and research, implement the Bologna process, can influence the policies of their universities, governments and the EU, and take joint initiatives on many other issues.
- To provide opportunities for liaisons with other groups pursuing relevant interests.
