Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione (Department of Information Engineering)

The Department of Information Engineering (DII) was established at the University of Siena in 1996. The central goal of the DII is to promote excellence in all areas of research and education in the field of Information Engineering. The main research activities include the areas of Automatic Control, Communications, Computer Science, Decision and Management Methods, Electrical Engineering, Electromagnetism, Electronics and Mathematical Analysis. Recently in addition to these topics that are central in the ICT area, research activities include energy - environment technologies and studies about geometrical structures. The DII joined the Centre for the Study of Complex Systems (CSC), established in 2000. Four spin-off companies are currently active in the Department. The DII, together with the University of Siena’s School of Engineering, ranked 1st among all small-medium Engineering Faculties in Italy (CIVR-2006 - Italian Committee for the Evaluation of Research) and the DII located in the first section of ranking of all the departments in University of Siena in 2006 - VAI - University Evaluation project. The Department includes 50 teaching/research staff (13 full professors, 15 associated professors, 22 adjunct professors) and 9 technical and administrative staff, 16 Research Associated and 40 PhD Information Engineering School students. The global staff number was reduced about 3% respect to 2007. The 2008 research activity was granted by 9 PRIN and 4 FIRB projects (ministry national projects), 12 EU projects, 31 research contracts with public and private companies. The active budget (including the EU projects) stands about 3 million euro.

I corsi di laurea triennale hanno l’obiettivo di assicurare allo studente un’adeguata padronanza di metodi e contenuti scientifici generali, nonché l’acquisizione di specifiche conoscenze professionali. Hanno durata triennale, prevedono l’acquisizione da parte dello studente di 180 crediti formativi universitari (CFU) e rilasciano il titolo di Laurea. I corsi comprendono insegnamenti con lezioni in aula e relativi esami, laboratori, esercitazioni individuali e/o guidate, tirocini e la verifica della conoscenza di una lingua straniera. Il percorso formativo si conclude con una prova finale consistente nella discussione di un elaborato scritto, al fine di accertare la preparazione tecnico-scientifica dei candidati. Dall'anno accademico 2009-2010, l'offerta didattica include tre corsi di laurea di primo livello: Ingegneria dell’Automazione (nella sede distaccata di Arezzo), Ingegneria Informatica e dell’Informazione, Ingegneria Gestionale. I corsi di laurea in Ingegneria Gestionale ed in Ingegneria dell’Automazione sono l’evoluzione dei corsi preesistenti con lo stesso nome. Il corso in Ingegneria Informatica e dell’Informazione è invece completamente nuovo: è di taglio generalista e prevede al suo interno percorsi formativi in ognuno dei quattro settori caratterizzanti l’area dell’Ingegneria dell’Informazione, ovvero automazione, elettronica, informatica e telecomunicazioni.

I corsi di laurea magistrale hanno l’obiettivo di fornire agli studenti una formazione di livello avanzato per l’esercizio di attività di elevata qualificazione in ambiti specifici. Hanno durata biennale, prevedono l’acquisizione da parte dello studente di 120 CFU e rilasciano il titolo di Laurea Magistrale. A conclusione è prevista la preparazione e la discussione di una tesi finale elaborata dagli studenti in modo originale sotto la guida di un relatore. Dall'anno accademico 2009-2010 l'offerta didattica include tre corsi di laurea magistrale: Ingegneria Elettronica e delle Telecomunicazioni, Ingegneria Informatica, Ingegneria Gestionale. La laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Informatica è articolata in due percorsi: Robotica ed Automazione e Sistemi Informatici. Quella in Ingegneria Gestionale è il proseguimento naturale della laurea triennale in Ingegneria Gestionale. La laurea magistrale in Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni arricchisce invece l’offerta formativa rispetto a quanto accadeva negli anni passati prevedendo due percorsi, uno in Elettronica ed uno in Telecomunicazioni.

The PhD Program in Information Engineering is a three-year program aiming at educating scholars in a number of fields of research, in view of possible jobs in public or private research structures in the Information area.
