Department of Computer Science

University of Freiburg, Faculty of Engineering

Freiburg, Germany

General Information

Introduction

The Department of Computer Science is one of the youngest departments at the university. After a developmental phase of only 15 years, CHE has ranked the department among the top 10 Computer Science institutions in Germany. It has received top marks for teaching, technical equipment and success in attracting external funding.

Organisation

We currently have 14 professors and approximately 110 research assistants working with us at the Department of Computer Science (IIF), in a total of 17 research groups spread over six divisions. They cover a broad spectrum of teaching and research topics which range from computer graphics to artificial intelligence, from algorithmics to software technology, and from communication systems to applications in engineering and the life sciences. The IIF also takes part in large interdisciplinary research projects and is active in special areas of research on both a national and international level.

Education

Bachelor degree

The Department of Computer Science offers two Bachelor degrees: - Bachelor of Science in Computer Science - Bachelor of Science in Embedded Systems Engineering Both Bachelor programs are taught in German and have a study duration of 6 semesters.

Master degree

The Department of Computer Science offers two Master degrees: - Master of Science in Computer Science - Master of Science in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Both Master programs are bilingual, that means the teaching is done in English and German. The duration of the Master programs is 4 semesters.

Student Statistics

The Department of Computer Science has got approximately 650 students, 15 % coming from abroad.

Research Activities

IIF at the University of Freiburg is a research facility, which regularly presents work at the most renowned conferences and in the most important magazines. Practical research is frequently carried out in cooperation with our students. Many important areas of computer science are researched in Freiburg. One of the fields we are currently focusing on is graphics and image processing systems, which includes research into specialized topics like searching for pictures in picture databases, or technology for the three-dimensional visualization of contorted objects. Within the fields of programming language and software technology, we are looking at how software systems can be examined for integrity. In a broader field, we are also carrying out research into formal basic structures and systems theories. Here, next to theoretical basics, we are also examining the issue of multimedia teaching support. Whilst in the context of computer architecture and operating systems we are interested in, for example, embedded systems and their reliability and security, in the field of communications and data storage we focus on computer networks and extracting information from the internet. Research in the field of artificial intelligence looks into questions of mechanical learning, the control of autonomous robots and cognitive systems. New to Freiburg is bioinformatics, in which we tackle new tasks arising from current research in fields like microbiology, pharmacy and medicine.
