Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award New Jobs @ Informatics Europe Job Platform Association News Board Members Re-election New Members Board Meetings Members News ECSS 2018 Informatics Renews and Transforms Gothenburg set the scene for the 14th edition of the European Computer Science Summit. With over 120 participants, impeccable organisation and a very exciting theme and program, the conference was a great success. A heartfelt thank you to the Conference Chairs, Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic and Ivica Crnkovic, from Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg and the Program Chairs, Letizia Jaccheri, Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Pekka Orponen, Aalto University for their drive and commitment in setting up such a high-quality event. Coaching Leaders The Dean’s Pre-Summit Workshop under the theme Personal Development had an innovative format this year, where participants were posed with complex questions about leadership and then had plenty of time for brainstorming within rotating small groups. The inspiring morning session was led by Geraldine Fitzgerald from TU Vienna who is a talented facilitator/coach specialized in positive organisations and leadership. The slides of the presentations from the Dean's Workshop and Main Summit are available for download on the conference website. 2018 Awards Ceremony and Winners At a joint Informatics Europe / ERCIM Award Ceremony during the ECSS 2018 the following Award winners were announced: ‘Tinkering in Informatics as a Teaching Method’, the project submitted by Angelika Mader, Ansgar Fehnker and Alma Schaafstal from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Twente (Netherlands) won the 2018 Informatics Europe Best Practices in Education Award. The Faculty of Information Systems and Applied Computer Sciences at the University of Bamberg (Germany) won the 3rd Minerva Informatics Equality Award for its contribution to the enrollment and retention of female students in Informatics programs. Martina Lindorfer (TU Wien) was selected as the winner of the ERCIM Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award 2018. Congratulations to the winners! Stay tuned for the 2019 Call for Submissions, coming early next year. Working Sessions Another innovation of the ECSS 2018 was the organization of parallel Working Sessions on the last afternoon of the event. Three parallel sessions were organized on the following topics: More Women in Informatics Research and Education: participants had the opportunity to exchange practices about the actions and projects being carried on in their departments to help with the widespread problem of the lack of women in Informatics research and education. The Informatics Europe Working Group Women in Informatics Research and Education lead the fruitful discussion where a number of new actions and projects were discussed and planned for the next year. The Wide Role of Informatics at Universities: Informatics Europe has recently established a new working group to investigate what European universities are doing to ensure that non-informatics teaching and research is informed by best practices in Informatics. Working group members met in Gothenburg to discuss the goals and strategy to collect data and best practices from the various Informatics departments across Europe. As an outcome of the working session, a survey was elaborated and distributed to Informatics Europe members. The online survey is open until November 30th, if your department would like to participate please complete the online survey. For questions or for joining the working group, please contact the Chair, Susan Eisenbach from Imperial College (s.eisenbach@imperial.ac.uk) National Associations Leaders: the working session united leaders of various National Associations (NAs) to discuss issues of key interest to the different national communities and the collaboration and exchange between Informatics Europe and the NAs. The meeting has been a success and as an outcome the NAs leaders decided to have a follow up meeting in Brussels next February as well another exchange session at the next ECSS in Rome. If your NAs missed the meeting in Gothenburg and would like to join the debate, please contact Helene Kirchner (helene.kirchner@inria.fr). After ECSS is before ECSS Save the dates! We are traveling to Italy in 2019: the next ECSS will be held from 28 to 30 October 2019, in Rome. The latest ‘Key Data Report’ is now available The "Informatics Education in Europe: Institutions, Degrees, Students, Positions, Salaries. Key Data 2012-2017" has been released during the ECSS 2018. Members had first hand access to the sixth edition of the series that brings to light key facts and figures of the European Informatics higher education. The report offers a wealth of fundamental data from 19 European countries in the past six years: from institutions awarding degrees in the field, student enrollments, degrees awarded, gender breakdown, academic titles, to much-needed data about academic careers and salaries across Europe. We encourage members who have access to reliable data sources in their respective countries to contribute to future editions! Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award The ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award is presented annually to an outstanding educator from a recognized educational baccalaureate institution. The Award celebrates advancing new teaching methodologies; effecting curriculum development or expansion in Computer Science and Engineering; or making a significant contribution to the educational mission of ACM. Educators with 10 years or less teaching experience are given special consideration. The award carries a prize of $10,000 and it is sponsored by Pearson Education. Of the 28 award winners since 1989, 24 are from North America, three from Europe and one from Asia. Nominations from European countries are highly encouraged and we invite Informatics Europe members to propose strong candidates. Association News Board Members Re-election At the 2018 Annual General Assembly held in Gothenburg (9 October) two Board members were re-elected: Hannes Werthner (TU Wien, Austria) and Michael Caspersen (IT vest, Denmark). We thank them for their active contribution to Informatics Europe’s development and wish a successful new term. Read more about the composition of our current Board on our website. Check out our current members list. Board Meetings The Informatics Europe Board met by teleconference on 28 September and face-to-face in Gothenburg on 7 October. A number of topics have been on the agenda, including: progress reports from the High-level Activities and Working Groups, Informatics for All, membership drive and organisation of ECSS 2018 and ECSS 2019. Members News Athens University of Economics and Business Honorary Doctorate: Professor of London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Chrysanthis Avgerou was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Department of Management & Technology (DMST) of the Athens University of Economics and Business. The award was given in recognition of her brilliant international career and academic contribution to the field of information systems. DMST’s Doctoral Program today numbers 140 doctoral students (within 20 years) and 74 doctoral candidates. TOBB ETÜ Department of Computer Engineering TOBB ETÜ is the only Turkish university to adopt Cooperative Education model, providing students valuable work experience prior to graduation both in Turkey and abroad. In 2018-2019, 9 students from the Department of Computer Engineering started their cooperative education at various institutions and companies across Europe, including the University of Twente, ETH Zurich, Cognite, Barcelona Supercomputing Center and Benhauer. Aiming to further expand and improve the program, TOBB ETÜ is eager to build new partnerships all around the world. This space is available to include relevant news from our member institutions.
