Dear Members, We are happy to send you the latest Informatics Europe bulletin, our bi-monthly newsletter for members. In this issue:
A word from Informatics Europe New PresidentProf Enrico Nardelli (Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Italy) has just started his term as President of Informatics Europe. Prior to his election, he has been actively involved in the Informatics Education Working Group. In a few words he described his vision for Informatics Europe: New report ‘Informatics Education in Europe – Key Data 2011-2016’Our latest report "Informatics Education in Europe: Institutions, Degrees, Students, Positions, Salaries. Key Data 2011-2016" is now available on our Publications webpage. Informatics Europe members will also receive a printed hard copy in the next months. The fifth edition of the report series on Informatics higher education in Europe offers a wealth of fundamental data from 16 European countries in the period 2011-2016. From institutions awarding degrees in the field, student enrolments, degrees awarded, gender information, academic titles, to much-needed data about academic salaries across Europe. Thanks to the active participation of several collaborators, who contributed to find and interpret data at national level, the report now includes Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, UK and France. We encourage members who have access to reliable data sources in their respective countries to contribute to future editions! ERCIM News call for contributions on Research Evaluation topicsThe Informatics Europe Research Evaluation Working Group published earlier in November the draft of a short report on research evaluation of individual researchers, typically for promotion or hiring. As a further step, Informatics Europe and ERCIM have jointly decided to edit a Special Section on Research Evaluation topics to appear in the ‘ERCIM News’ issue of April 2018. You are warmly invited to contribute and to disseminate this call to your colleagues who might be interested! Deadline for contributions is 15 February 2018. Updating the Research & Education DirectoryInformatics Europe launched in 2011 the online Research & Education Directory, open to all European faculties, departments or institutes doing Research and Education in Informatics and related areas. The goal was to provide a reference gateway to all European academic Informatics institutions and to more specific information on their research and education activities. Each entry is submitted, managed and updated directly by each institution via the user-login system, which gives direct access to the Directory. Therefore, each institution is responsible for the accuracy and currentness of the content. Earlier in December we have requested the institutions already featuring in the directory to update their entries, since we are organizing an overall update of the Directory. Additionally, we have invited Informatics Europe members not yet featuring in the list to add their department/faculty to the Directory. Nominations open for the 6th Heidelberg ForumThe Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) annually connects promising young researchers in Mathematics and Computer Science with the top scientists in their fields. For one week (23-28 September 2018), the Forum Foundation invites the recipients of the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the ACM Prize in Computing, the Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize to join 200 carefully selected young researchers in Heidelberg, the oldest university town in Germany. The purpose is to provide an informal atmosphere where the most accomplished minds of the field thoroughly interact with the next generation’s brightest minds. To be considered for the Heidelberg Forum, Undergraduates, PhD candidates and Postdocs can either apply directly or be nominated by a colleague (professor, mentor or manager) who can attest to the quality of their work. Applications and nominations must be completed by February 9, 2018.
