Europe’s first Summer School on Informatics Education Research with IBM Research Europe
We are pleased to announce our partnership with our industry member IBM Research Europe to launch our first Summer School on Informatics Education Research (SCHIER) in Rüschlikon (ZH), Switzerland this September!
The urgent need for investment in informatics education has been highlighted by the recent Recommendation of the Council of the EU. SCHIER, the only training school in Europe to focus on informatics education research, is ideal for PhD students, post doctorates and other researchers in informatics and related fields, and anyone interested in exploring informatics education research challenges. During the 5-day immersive program, participants can explore innovative teaching and learning methods in the digital age. They will also engage in constructive dialogues with peers and experts from both academia and industry, on both regional and European issues in informatics education research.
Save the date: 2-6 September 2024! Join us at SCHIER - registration information coming soon! Meanwhile, visit our SCHIER webpage to learn how you can join the transformative journey in informatics education research.

Join new IE Board Directors for further missions
Since January 2024, the IE Board has welcomed representatives from five new institutions: Gert Jervan (Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia), Michael Kölling (King’s College London, UK), Dympna O’Sullivan (TU Dublin, Ireland), Heri Ramampiaro (NTNU, Norway) and Jan Vahrenhold (University of Münster, Germany). This addition brings fresh perspectives to Informatics Europe, aiding in IE’s strategic development. They will also offer renewed support in specific areas now under their responsibilities: industry engagement and sponsoring, Informatics Education, Ethics in Informatics and National Informatics Associations Relations.
Alongside these five professors, four existing Directors have stepped into new roles on the IE’s Executive Committee. We congratulate Jean-Marc Jézéquel (IRISA/University of Rennes, France) as new IE President, Marco Aiello (University of Stuttgart, Germany) as Vice-President on top of leading the Green ICT working group, Kim Mens (UC Louvain, Belgium) as Vice-President while continuing to coordinate the Board’s IE membership growth efforts, and Elisabetta Di Nitto (Politecnico di Milano, Italy) as Treasurer.
As we enter this new chapter, we encourage all Informatics Europe members to lend their support to our directors by actively engaging and collaborating in IE activities and working groups. Interested in becoming an IE Board Director or nominating a colleague? Explore how in our call for Board Nominations here. Nomination deadline for the 2025-2027 term closes on 1 May 2024.
Join us in making a meaningful impact in Informatics and related fields!
*** Member representatives are welcome to submit agenda topics and participate as observers in the monthly IE board meetings. Write us if you’d like to join: administration@informatics-europe.org.

"New study pinpoints the weaknesses in AI"
by University of Copenhagen, Denmark
The rise of ChatGPT and other Machine Learning-based solutions is remarkable. However, even the most successful algorithms have their limitations. Researchers from University of Copenhagen has recently been the first to prove mathematically that apart from simple problems, it is infeasible to create AI algorithms that are always stable. The study could pay the way for improved algorithm testing protocols and serves a reminder that machines do not have human intelligence after all. Read the full story here.
"Project for more sustainable and high-performance data analytics kicks off"
by Politecnico Milano, Italy
The project "Discount Quality for Responsible Data Science: Human-in-the-Loop for Quality Data", coordinated by Prof. Barbara Pernici from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering officially kicked off. The project, funded by PRIN, has been designed in a scenario characterized by several attempts to build data 'spaces' and 'ecosystems' which support the publication and reuse of scientific data for feeding pipelines, i.e. the processes that data scientists specify and execute to prepare, transform, enrich and analyse data. The project intends to exploit a Human-In-The-Loop approach to increase the overall sustainability of the pipeline, both from a computational point of view and in terms of human effort.
