Capable academic leaders in informatics and computing disciplines are needed now more than ever as informatics has become a key driver in innovation and has become entangled in all aspects of society. But leading successfully in an academic environment is challenging. How do you address these challenges in a complex academic environment? How do you develop people and create strong collegial environments where people can do their best work? And how do you not just survive but thrive as a leader?

This course is facilitated by Prof. Geraldine Fitzpatrick and Prof. Austen Rainer, who both are senior informatics/computing academics with strong leadership backgrounds, complemented by evidence-based approaches to positive leadership practice.


Target Audience

The course is targeted at middle/senior-level leaders in informatics and related disciplines who have substantive leadership roles. Indicative examples are project leader, group leader, theme leader, or head of an institute, school, faculty, department (or equivalent in your institution); or any other academic leadership service roles.

  • Evaluate your own strengths as an academic leader;
  • Locate your academic leadership within its wider context;
  • Identify and practice simple techniques for helping you to survive and thrive as an academic leader;
  • Identify and practice simple techniques to transform your interactions with the people you are leading;
  • Integrate evidence-based recommendations with reflection on your and others’ experience with individual, pair, and small-group activities;
  • Develop a plan of action for growing as an academic leader;
  • Develop strong professional relationships with other participants as the basis for a subsequent ongoing peer-support network.

All participants of the Academic Leadership Course will receive an Informatics Europe Certificate recognising their participation in the course.

Location, Dates & Agenda

This 3-day course will take place 27 - 30 June 2023, starting with an opening lunch on the first day and completing with a closing lunch on the last day.

Successfully registered participants will receive an email from the facilitators about the detailed agenda and preparation work before the course.

Registration Process & Deadlines

Registration is closed now.


Places are limited to 18 participants. The registration fee includes the full cost of the seminar, accommodation in single occupancy room for three nights, access to the indoor swimming pool, sauna, and gym, coffee breaks as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets for the days of the seminar (10 meals in total).
Not included: travel costs, alcoholic beverages, drinks at the bar, and additional drinks at lunch and dinner.

The registration fee payment* is due within 14 days from the invoice date. Your registration will only be confirmed upon receipt of your full registration fee payment. 

The course will take place provided a minimum of 12 participants is reached. In the case of course cancellation, the paid registration fee will be reimbursed. All registered participants will receive a course re-confirmation on or before May 19th. We highly recommend our participants book refundable and/or changeable train/flight tickets to avoid hassles due to last-minute changes.
