Survey on Female Speakers - Women in Informatics Research & Education

The Informatics Europe Women in Informatics Research and Education Working Group (WIRE) is a permanent working group of our organization promoting actions that help improving gender balance at all stages of the career path in Informatics.

Women represent the minority studying and pursuing academic careers in Informatics. The higher the academic rank, the smaller female representation. This imbalance has a broad range of (negative) consequences; one of them is the very low number, or in many cases a complete absence, of female speakers in conferences and events in our field.

This problem exists in part because conference Chairs do not consider diversity as a key element while designing the program, and in part because there are proportionally far fewer women leading research and teaching in the field, and therefore fewer potential female speakers. The few well known women tend to be overloaded with invitations, while many excellent younger or less known speakers are simply being overlooked.

WIRE would like to get recommendation of excellent female speakers from our member institutions with the goal of working on a project to create a visible list of excellent European female speakers in the different research areas of Informatics (Computing, IT, Computer Science). We expect this list will serve as a source and inspiration for Program Chairs of international conferences. This survey is the first step to achieve this very challenging goal.

We hope you will be able to contribute to this project, to bring visibility of your female colleagues and to more diverse conferences!
