The Computing Center of the Babes-Bolyai has been founded in 1975. A few years later, in 1977, the Collective of Computer Science has been created as the first computer science kernel of the Faculty of Mathematics. Later, in 1990, the Chair of Computer Science has been formally established. The first undergraduate program of the Faculty of Mathematics, in Computing machinery, dates back since 1961, and since 1971 the faculty runs the undergraduate program in Computer Science. The Department of Computer Science pursues research in the following areas of Computer Science: theoretical computer science, programming languages and paradigms, artificial intelligence, software engineering, information systems and databases, distributed systems, computer systems. The courses cover a broad range of computer science topics and lead to degrees at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level. Additionally, the Department provides computer science courses for students of other departments of the BBU and continuing education programs.
The Department of Computer Science is part of the Faculty of Mathematics of Computer Science. The Faculty has the following structure: - Department of Mathematics; - Department of Computer Science; - Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Hungarian line. The Department of Computer Science operates a number of research centers and research groups accredited internally.
