Kick-off Academic Leadership Development Online Course

On 15 September 2020 Informatics Europe hosted the kick-off event of the online Academic Leadership Development Course for emerging academic leaders in Informatics. This highly interactive and practical course is designed by computer scientists for computer scientists and co-led by Prof. Geraldine Fitzpatrick and Prof. Austen Rainer. The course will run from September to November, every two weeks, with 90 minutes sessions. The great success of the first online session is reflected in the positive participants’ feedback (extracted from Mentimeter).

Outlook: 1st Meeting COST Action European Network for Gender Balance in Informatics

On 19 and 20 October 2020, the first meeting for the COST Action European Network for Gender Balance in Informatics will take place online, hosted by the COST Association. This is the kick-off event of the Action which will run for 4 years and aims at improving gender balance in Informatics at all levels, from undergraduate and graduate studies to participation and leadership in academia and industry, through the creation and strengthening of a truly European network of colleagues working on the forefront of the efforts for gender balance in Informatics in their countries, institutions and research communities. The Action has currently around 90 participants from 35 countries. Informatics Europe is the leading organization and most leading roles of the Action will be taken by members of the WIRE working group. Letizia Jaccheri, WIRE Chair is also the Action Chair.

Politecnico di Milano, Italy - A Politecnico di Milano study reveals the DNA "grammar"

Genome biology published research on the rules governing the shape of DNA in space. DNA three-dimensional structure is determined by a series of spatial rules based on particular protein sequences and their order. This was the finding of a study recently published in Genome Biology by Luca Nanni, one of the PhD students in Computer Science and Engineering, together with Professors Stefano Ceri of DEIB and Colin Logie of the University of Nijmegen (Netherlands). Luca Nanni explains: “Our study’s greatest innovation lies in having identified precise rules for the disposition of CTCF proteins. [...] Knowing these rules allow CTCF sequences to be engineered to obtain the desired DNA three-dimensional structure. For example, it should be possible to make two disconnected genes interact. Moulding DNA structure will open doors to the creation of pharmaceuticals for the treatment of diseases such as cancer.”

University of Twente, University of Groningen, Netherlands - Manifesto on Software Research and Education in the Netherlands

VERSEN, the Dutch National Association for Software Engineering, has been working in 2019 and 2020 on a "Manifesto on Software Research and Education in the Netherlands". In its manifesto, VERSEN explicitly lists four groups of challenges that it is in a perfect position to address:
  1. Software reliability. How do we ensure that complex software behaves as expected, does what society needs, and is robust against unexpected uses?
  2. Efficient engineering. Software engineering is exceeding human scale in terms of velocity, volume and variety. How do we keep pace?
  3. Software maintainability and evolution. How do we create software with a long operational life that can be evolved and migrated to new technologies in a cost-effective way? And how can the software engineering team be organised in such a way that it embraces change and facilitates sustainable maintenance and evolution?
  4. Software education. How can we supply the job market with well-equipped and highly qualified personnel from a diverse background?
