Workshop Bridging the Digital Talent Gap

Informatics Europe organised in partnership with the European Commission DG CONNECT the workshop Bridging the Digital Talent Gap - Towards Successful Industry-University Partnerships. The workshop brought together higher education organisations, industry, public policymakers and students to identify current challenges, opportunities and solutions to bridge the supply/demand gap in Europe for graduates with the skills needed by European businesses to grow and innovate. In three parallel breakout sessions dedicated to Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Software Engineering, participants were able to work together to explore the issues at stake, and co-design concrete solutions for the way forward. During the workshop the European Commissions announced the plan for funding of around 700 million to be employed in education actions and projects aiming at closing the digital talent gap. A report about the workshop with a series of recommendations for helping to close the digital talent gap in Europe will be published in the coming months, keep tuned!

A short news article about the workshop has been published on the Digital Single Market newsletter, which will increase the visibility of the event and the collaboration of Informatics Europe with the European Commission.

Erasmus+ Project Ethics4EU - Ethical Computer Science Education for Europe

We happy to announce that the Erasmus+ Project Ethics4EU, in which we are involved as partners, has received a grant of near half million Euros. The key aims of the project are to develop a common understanding of European values in Ethics in Technology, to develop a community of practice amongst Computer Science and Ethics lecturers who will work together to develop online resources for the teaching and assessment of ethics in Computer Science programmes, and to upskill lecturers with the knowledge, skills and competencies in ethical technology development in a European context. Informatics Europe will work together with the leading organization, TU Dublin, and the other partners, and support dissemination and communication of all actions and outcomes, as well as help to recruit participants to the different surveys and training phases. The topic and goals of the project are aligned with the current focus of our Ethics Working group: Ethical/social Impact of Informatics as a Study Subject in Informatics University Degree Programs. The project kick-off events will take place in Dublin 20-21 November 2019. We will keep our members informed of the main activities and outcomes of the project.

If you would like to strengthen your Erasmus proposal by including Informatics Europe as a partner organization, please do not hesitate to contact us! A separate call about EU project partnerships will be shortly sent to our members.

National Association Meetings

Representatives of several National Informatics Associations (NAs) met in Rome for an informal lunch and discussion on synergies and how to collaborate among them and with Informatics Europe. The group also exchanged feedback on past meetings and actions and discussed further upcoming meetings and actions. The representatives agreed that it is highly beneficial for the national communities to join forces to discuss and find strategies to face common problems. With that in mind a new meeting of the NAs with Informatics Europe will be held in Zurich on 30 of January 2020, collocated with meetings of the Informatics Europe Board. To remain updated on the shared actions and outcome of the meetings of the NAs visit our website at: https://www.informatics-europe.org/community/national-associations.html

New Reports

In October two new reports were published by the following Informatics Europe working groups:

  • "The Wide Role of Informatics at Universities". The report presents the results of the online survey conducted by the working group on the Wide Role of Informatics at Universities. Its main goals were to understand the value universities place on interdisciplinary research and teaching, what happens in practice with hiring and supporting interdisciplinary academics, and what structures are in place to support interdisciplinary work. The Data Science’s impact was also examined in detail, given its rapid rise and importance. 48 universities from 19 European countries have participated in the survey providing answers on these strategic topics. The report can be downloaded here.
  • "Ethical/Social Impact of Informatics as a Study Subject in Informatics University Degree Programs". The report is the first outcome of the activity of the working group on Ethical/Social Impact of Informatics as a Study Subject in Informatics University Degree Programs. It outlines the possible approaches, the state of the art, and suggestions and guidelines for inclusion of topics related to ethics, responsibility and social impacts in Informatics university degree programs. It summarizes in data and figures the results of the online survey conducted among working group members in Spring 2019. Members replied to the questionnaire providing their comments and feedback on the topic. This collected material is the first step towards a deeper and informed discussion about the topic of if and how ethical/social impact of Informatics should be a study subject in Informatics university degree programs. The report can be downloaded here.

Software Heritage Acquisition Process (SWHAP)

On October 10, the Software Heritage Acquisition Process (SWHAP) was announced in Pisa, a set of detailed guidelines that provide an actionable tool to address the urgent need to harvest, curate, archive and make available landmark legacy source code that has been developed over the past half a century, while the key people that created it are still available to share their knowledge. This work is the result of an intense collaboration between the University of Pisa and the Software Heritage team at Inria, in partnership with UNESCO. The guidelines, a worked example and a collaboration mailing list can be found at https://www.softwareheritage.org/swhap.

Please help to gather and preserve the artefacts and narratives of the history of computing by using yourself the SWHAP process and spreading this piece of news.
