ECSS 2019: Early Bird Registration until September 15
Time for the European Computer Science Summit (ECSS 2019, Rome 28-30 October) is approaching fast! Have you already registered? IMPORTANT: Early-bird fees are still available until September 15. Register asap to benefit from the discounted prices!
The conference opens on Monday with the Workshop for Leaders of Informatics Research and Education and the Workshop of the WIRE working group. The program continues with keynote addresses and a thought-provoking discussion panel on the central theme 'Social Responsibility of Informatics'. An array of interdisciplinary topics regarding the interplay between Informatics and Ethics, Law, Privacy as well as Responsible Research and Innovation and Artificial Intelligence will be addressed by a selection of distinguished speakers from all over Europe. Rounding up Tuesday’s program, we will have the Informatics Europe and ERCIM Awards Ceremony, the Dialogue with Members Session and the Informatics Europe Annual General Assembly where key topics of relevance to the community and the development of the organisation will be actively discussed. The Summit is concluded on Wednesday with a very special Workshop on Bridging the Digital Talent Gap in Europe, organised by Informatics Europe in partnership with the European Commission DG CONNECT.

Informatics Europe has started this year to get involved and apply for European funded projects. We are partners in the Erasmus project European Ethical Computer Science Education (Ethics4EU). The project is led by the Department of Computer Science of TU Dublin (which is a member of our organization) and has been successfully granted in a very competitive process where only 20% of the proposals are funded. The project will start from January 2020 and its main topic is in line with Informatics Europe work on Ethics and in particular the current working group on "Ethical/social Impact of Informatics as a Study Subject in Informatics University Degree Programs".
Informatics Europe is also a partner in the project KEYSTEM: Key Steps Towards More Women in Stem, submitted to the call Girls4STEM that aims to fund one pilot project within the work programme for 2019 in the field of "Communications Networks, Content and Technology". The project is led by the University of L'Aquila and has been submitted on August 27, results are to be known in Fall 2019.
Informatics Europe has also been the leading organization in two COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action proposals that have been submitted this month. One to build a European Network for Gender Balance in Informatics, in line with our working group on Women in Informatics Research and Education and another to build a European Network on Research on Informatics Education, in line with our working group on Education and the Informatics for All initiative. The two proposals were submitted on September 5 and the outcome will be known in Spring 2020.
Minutes and Slides of Informatics National Associations Meeting in Zurich
On July 9 we had the honour to welcome the representatives of eleven National Informatics Associations at our headquarters in Zurich. The central point of discussion was Research Evaluation. Participants presented and discussed the current status and practices in their countries as well as key projects for the community: DPLP, OpenCitations, GII-GRIN-SCIE Conference Rating system and Open Science. 2019 Annual General Assembly
The Annual General Assembly of our association will be held, this year in Rome, Italy on October 29, 2019. The official invitation with detailed agenda and documentation will be sent to all members by the end of September. The agenda includes financial reporting and planning, elections and presentation and discussion of our strategic activities and planning for future development and growth.
Your participation, vote and opinion about the future of the organization are very important! We hope your institution will be represented this year.

University of Bari "Aldo Moro"
The Department of Computer Science of the University of Bari "Aldo Moro", Italy, and the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Union have jointly signed an agreement for a collaborative doctoral partnership (CDP) in the field of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity. The objective of a CDP is to establish strategic collaborations between JRC and higher education institutions characterised by research excellence and international reputation in specific fields, in order to train a new generation of doctoral students interested in science-based evidence for policy making.
