Informatics Europe’s Bulletin - November 2017

Dear Members,

We are happy to send you the latest Informatics Europe bulletin, our bi-monthly newsletter for members.

In this issue:

Connecting at the ECSS 2017 in Lisbon!

The Rectorate of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa hosted the 13th European Computer Science Summit (23-25 October 2017). With over 110 participants this year, ECSS is consolidating its position as a major event in Informatics education and research in Europe. The conference provided a unique forum for productive discussions on a series of key educational and scientific questions, from the increasing demand of Informatics training across disciplines, to the challenges of connectivity in an ever-growing globalized society.

Save the dates! We are travelling up-north in 2018: the next Summit will be held from 8 to 10 of October 2018, in Gothenburg, Sweden, hosted by Chalmers University. General Chairs Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic and Ivica Crnkovic (Chalmers University, Sweden) and Program Chairs Letizia Jaccheri (NTU, Norway) and Pekka Orponen (Aalto University, Finland) are looking forward to your suggestions in order to make the next ECSS a great success!

Informatics Europe 2017 Awards Winners

At a joint Informatics Europe / ERCIM Award Ceremony during the ECSS 2017 the following Award winners were announced:

Congratulations to the winners! Stay tuned for the 2018 Call for Submissions, coming in next February.

Research Evaluation Report

The Informatics Europe Research Evaluation Working Group has released a draft of the report ‘Informatics Research Evaluation’, which is now available for download. The report brings forward an updated set of recommendations and tools, focussing on the assessment of individual researchers, typically for promotion or hiring. Comments and contributions are welcome by the end of November 2017. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact Prof Floriana Esposito.

Promoting Female Speakers

As part of the recent activities of the Working Group ‘Women in Informatics Research and Education’, we are asking our members to suggest names of high-calibre female speakers from their departments. It is unfortunately a fact that at most Informatics conferences female keynote speakers are highly under-represented. This problem is in part result of conference Chairs not considering diversity as a key element when designing the program, and in part because there are proportionally far fewer women leading research and teaching in the field, and therefore fewer potential female speakers. WIRE would like to create a visible list of excellent European female speakers, in the different research areas of Informatics, to serve as a source and inspiration for conference Program Chairs.

You can suggest excellent female speakers to our list by answering this short online survey:

Call for Nominations: ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award

The ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award is presented annually to an outstanding educator from a recognized educational baccalaureate institution. The recipient is recognized for advancing new teaching methodologies; effecting new curriculum development or expansion in Computer Science and Engineering; or making a significant contribution to the educational mission of ACM. Those with 10 years or less teaching experience are given special consideration. The award carries a prize of $10,000 and it is sponsored by Pearson Education. Of the 27 award winners since 1989, 24 are from North America, two from Europe and one from Asia. Nominations from European countries are highly encouraged and we invite Informatics Europe members to propose strong candidates (past winners of educator awards in SIGs are of course potential candidates).

  • Visit the Nomination page and submit your proposal before the 15th January 2018.
  • For more information please contact: Michael E. Caspersen, Chair of Informatics Europe's Working Group on Informatics Education and Member of the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Award Committee (2018-2021).

  • Obituary: Professor Corrado Bohm left us on October 23 at the age of 94. His outstanding work have deeply influenced the development of theoretical computer science. In his PhD thesis a language, a machine and a compiler were designed together for the first time. The seminal result (nowadays known as the Bohm-Jacopini theorem) has been a theoretical basis of structured programming, opening the way to all generations of modern programming languages. He was one of the first scientists to investigate the link between lambda-calculus and theoretical computer science, a fruitful research field that opened the foundation of programming language semantics.
