Minerva Award: call for submissions now open
Informatics Europe proudly announces the second edition of the Minerva Informatics Equality Award, which seeks to encourage and support the careers of women in Informatics research and education. This year, the award is devoted to initiatives supporting the transition of female PhD and Postdoctoral Researchers into Faculty positions. The winner(s) will be presented at the 13th European Computer Science Summit, in October 2017, and invited to give a talk on their achievements. The Award is sponsored by Google and carries a prize of 5.000 EUR.

Best Practices in Education Award: call for submissions now open
To continue promoting teaching quality in Informatics, Informatics Europe presents every year the Best Practices in Education Award. On its 6th edition, the Award is devoted to curriculum and professional development initiatives for making Informatics education available to all.
The Award, which carries a prize of 5.000 EUR, will be presented at the 13th European Computer Science Summit, in October 2017, where the winner or winners will be invited to give a talk on their achievements.

ECSS 2017: Informatics Connects!
This year’s ECSS Program Chairs, Markus Püschel, ETH Zurich and member of the Informatics Europe Board, and José Fiadeiro, Royal Holloway University of London, are joining forces to craft the program of the 13th edition of the Summit that will be held in Lisbon, 23-25 October 2017. The conference is hosted by the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, under the general chairmanship of Luís Caires, Head of the Department of Informatics, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and Lynda Hardman, CWI and Informatics Europe President.
The 2017 edition will focus on connectivity and how the ongoing digital revolution and globalization deeply affects Informatics education and research, and their role in society.
A selection of distinguished speakers will enlighten us around the connectivity challenge in its various forms, including examples of successful stories. A number of technical talks on selected key issues and discussion panels will complete the program.

Informatics Europe signs Open Letter to European leaders regarding science in the USA
Informatics Europe signed, together with other 46 leading European science organisations, an open letter highlighting the negative impact of the ongoing policy reorientation under President Donald Trump and his administration on future scientific progress. The letter calls for European political and scientific communities to work closely with their counterparts in the US administration to maintain a global science system based on the open exchange of people and ideas.
The letter has been sent to the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas, as well as the Prime Ministers and Ministers responsible for science of all EU member states and those of Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Serbia.

Association News
Staff Changes in the Informatics Europe Office in Zurich
We are happy to welcome Irene Contreras to the Informatics Europe team!
She will replace Inge van Halst and work part time in the role of Communications and Membership Manager. Originally from Spain, Irene holds a Master’s degree in International Relations and Foreign Languages and has previous experience working for the UN and other international organizations in the communications field.
We wish Irene a lot of success in her new role!
After two very successful years working for Informatics Europe Inge van Halst is leaving the organization. Inge has had a fundamental role in reshaping the image of Informatics Europe, and professionalizing the way the organization communicates with its various stakeholders. Among her projects was the development of a brand new visual identity for the organization and the full redesign of the Informatics Europe website, including a microsite for the ECSS conferences. Inge had also a key role in supporting the office administration and membership management and growth. We wish Inge all the best for her future and success in her new endeavours and projects.

The Informatics Europe Board met face-to-face on 24th February, at CWI Amsterdam, for discussions on: future office resources, membership drive, ECSS 2017, Board renewal and elections 2017, activity of current and future working groups, 2017 Awards, collaboration with related organizations.
