Informatics Europe’s Bulletin  December 2016

Dear Members,

We are happy to send you the latest Informatics Europe bulletin, our bi-monthly newsletter for members. We also take this opportunity to wish you and your beloved ones a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

In this issue:

ECSS 2016 Highlights

Around ninety deans, department heads, research directors and senior academics from over twenty countries met in Budapest for the 12th edition of the European Computer Science Summit -  dedicated to the theme: Informatics Driving the Digital World. Indeed, our discipline is at the centre of the digital revolution. Yet, what challenges, requirements and promises does that hold for Informatics and for Informatics departments? A full two days of panel discussions, presentations, networking and debate tried to provide answers.

  • The slide presentations are available for download in the ECSS 2016 online program.
  • Click here for highlights and photos
  • Save the dates! ECSS 2017 will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, 23-25th October 2017, hosted by the NOVA University of Lisbon.

Time to celebrate

2016 Award Winners
At  a joint Informatics Europe / ERCIM Award Ceremony during ECSS 2016, the Informatics Europe Best Practices in Education Award was granted to the Italian ALaDDIn Project. University College London won the first Minerva Informatics Equality Award, and Michał Pilipczuk, University of Warsaw, won the 2016 Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award. Congratulations to the winners!

100 Member Milestone
Informatics Europe also celebrated the 100 member milestone at ECSS 2016 in Budapest. “Growing our community is key to make the Informatics research and academic community in Europe stronger and more influential", comments Lynda Hardman, IE President. "It is critical that we connect, collaborate and speak up on topics that shape the future of our discipline in Europe."

Data Report: Informatics Education in Europe 2010-2015

This is the fourth edition of our report series and offers unique insights into the state of higher education in Informatics in Europe today. Three new countries have been added: Belgium, Romania and Estonia. The report now covers 13 countries and includes data on: institutions offering studies field,  student enrollments, degrees awarded, gender information, academic titles, and academic salaries across European countries.

  • The online version can be downloaded here.
  • A printed copy will be sent to you in January.
  • The report is available on our website, under Publications.
  • If your country is not included in the report and you would like to help gathering and interpreting the data nationally, please contact Cristina Pereira.

Best Practice Booklet: More Women in Informatics Research and Education

Not yet hot off the press (you`ll need to wait for January), but available online is the second edition of our popular best practice booklet: More Women in Informatics Research and Education. This compact resource is published by the Informatics Europe working group Women in Informatics Research and Education and endorsed by the European Commission. It provides deans and department heads clear and simple best practices to increase the participation of women in their institutions, both as students and as employees.

  • The booklet can be downloaded here
  • Printed copies will be sent to you in January.
  • It is available in the Publications section of our website, under the Best Practice Booklets tab.
  • If you know a colleague or somebody in your network who could act as a national contact point for the WIRE working group, please contact Jane Hillston

2017 Minerva Informatics Equality Award

We are happy to announce that Google will sponsor the 2017 Minerva Informatics Equality Award.  The 2017 Minerva Award will focus on supporting the transition of female PhD and Postdoctoral Researchers into faculty positions.

Prof. Christine Choppy, University of Paris 13, will chair the 2017 Award Committee. The committee is being convened and will be announced together with the full call for participation in early 2017.

If your department or faculty has implemented successful policies to retain talented young female researchers, get ready to apply for the Minerva Informatics Equality Award.

Sharing Minerva Best Practices

As a reference and source of ideas for departments seeking to effectively act on the issue of gender imbalance in Informatics, all 2016 entries for the Minerva Informatics Equality Award have been shared on a dedicated best practice page in the Informatics Europe website.

The 2017 and 2018 Minerva award editions will focus respectively on supporting the transition of young female researchers into faculty positions and on encouraging enrollment and retention of female students in Informatics studies. The best practice page, therefore, will be a growing repository of proven actions to improve gender balance in all stages of the academic career pipeline.

New Working Group on Ethics: Are You In?

Informatics Europe Board Member James Larus, EPFL, will chair a working group on Ethics, with the goals to
  • produce an authoritative report that will be distributed to members and published on the IE website
  • form a network of experts to call upon if a topic comes up in the press where IE can provide sound technical knowledge to inform public debate in a timely fashion.
If you or a member of your department / institute is interested in joining the working group and helping to shape the goals, please contact James Larus.

Nominate Young Colleagues for the ACM Future of Computing Academy

The ACM Council created the ACM Future of Computing Academy to bring together talented young academics, practitioners, researchers and entrepreneurs from various computing disciplines to address the most pressing challenges facing the field and society at large. Members of the Academy will typically be in their 20s and early 30s from around the world.

ACM invites Informatics Europe members to recommend outstanding and energetic young colleagues to be considered for the ACM Future of Computing Academy.

It is an opportunity for them to reach beyond their immediate professional context and interact with highly accomplished colleagues across various computing disciplines and professions.

Academy members will be invited to attend ACM’s celebration of 50 Years of the ACM Turing Award, 23-24th June 2017, in San Francisco, where they will have the opportunity to interact with ACM A.M. Turing Award laureates. The inaugural meeting of the ACM Future of Computing Academy will take place after this conference on 25th June.
  • You can provide names and email addresses using this link: www.acm.org/fca/recommend.  Deadline for nominations is end of December.  The application process will open in early January.
